SUMMARY:Life on the Verge:  Wildlife and Biodiversity Planning
DESCRIPTION:Imagine the key green spaces around Buckfastleigh and Buckfast becoming havens for wildlife and awash with Dartmoor wildflowers. We’ve all been hearing about wildlife declines and the loss of their habitat. Once common species\, from bumblebees to butterflies\, are struggling – 56% of all UK species have declined in abundance since 1970. The good news is we can all help to reverse these trends. Our green spaces\, verges\, parks and gardens can be part of the solution. \nEvery Parish Council in Devon now has the opportunity to take on the responsibility for managing road verges from Devon County Council. Since 2015\, DCC have only been cutting a handful of grassland verges for health and safety reasons and leaving the rest unmanaged. If the Parish Council takes the management over\, the verges around the Parish could be managed for nature. \nIf you would like to hear more about this proposal /join in the debate/find out how to get involved\, then come to Buckfastleigh Town Hall on 12th September at 6.30 pm.  Donna Cox from Moor Meadows will give an introductory talk and renowned Dartmoor naturalist John Walters will be give a fascinating presentation on the Life on the Verge.  If weather permits we will visit some of the sites in Buckfastleigh interested in taking part.”

SUMMARY:Upstream/Downstream - Flooding & The Future
DESCRIPTION:A day to explore the effects of flooding and how we can manage flood water naturally…\nIn conjunction with the Environment Agency project to explore natural floodwater management in Dartmoor\, join Plymouth University academic Tom Murphy and the Buckfastleigh flood action group on the 14th July for an open day to look at the effects of flooding and how these can be alleviated naturally. \nThe day will start in Buckfastleigh with a brief introduction on the climate changes expected for Dartmoor\, followed by a walk through the town for a tour of the impacts of the November 2012 floods. The walk will involve first hand accounts of the flooding impacts\, hearing from current residents about how these experiences and memories changed and continue to affect their lives. \nAfter this\, a lunchtime picnic on the Moor will be followed by a walk near Buckfastleigh and Dean Moor\, the headwaters of the Dean Burn and Mardle rivers.  We will talk about the potential for upstream natural land management to reduce flood risk to downstream communities. The walk will be an opportunity to hear the opinions from local landowners and farmers on this strategy\, discuss the challenges they face and their future land management aspirations. \nThe day is an opportunity for both upland and downstream communities to tell their story and come together to discuss natural flood management options for the prevention of flood risk.
