SUMMARY:Upstream/Downstream - Flooding & The Future
DESCRIPTION:A day to explore the effects of flooding and how we can manage flood water naturally…\nIn conjunction with the Environment Agency project to explore natural floodwater management in Dartmoor\, join Plymouth University academic Tom Murphy and the Buckfastleigh flood action group on the 14th July for an open day to look at the effects of flooding and how these can be alleviated naturally. \nThe day will start in Buckfastleigh with a brief introduction on the climate changes expected for Dartmoor\, followed by a walk through the town for a tour of the impacts of the November 2012 floods. The walk will involve first hand accounts of the flooding impacts\, hearing from current residents about how these experiences and memories changed and continue to affect their lives. \nAfter this\, a lunchtime picnic on the Moor will be followed by a walk near Buckfastleigh and Dean Moor\, the headwaters of the Dean Burn and Mardle rivers.  We will talk about the potential for upstream natural land management to reduce flood risk to downstream communities. The walk will be an opportunity to hear the opinions from local landowners and farmers on this strategy\, discuss the challenges they face and their future land management aspirations. \nThe day is an opportunity for both upland and downstream communities to tell their story and come together to discuss natural flood management options for the prevention of flood risk.

DESCRIPTION:Following the tasty success of the first ever Buckfastleigh SOUP community fundraising event  in October 2018\, Buckfastleigh Town Council and Teignbridge CVS have organised the next event to support small groups and individuals with new community ideas. \nLocal people come together\, donate for a bowl of soup and two tokens to vote\, and listen to four local individuals or small groups pitch their project idea.  \nPitchers each have the floor for up to five minutes and must rely on their passion\, creativity and speaking abilities to win over the audience – no giveaways or PowerPoint. \nWith the presentations over\, soup is served – time to think\, chat with others\, and mull over the ideas before choosing your favourites. \nThe winning pitches each get to take home between them the money taken at the door and their share of local donations. They get to use it to fund their plans\, with the promise they will come back to report on their progress at the next SOUP event. \nThis time we will have a rolling registration for those wishing to pitch – remember you do not need to have a constitution to pitch just a great idea benefitting the community!  \nThose wishing to pitch should write a paragraph about their idea/project and send it to anja@teigncvs.org.uk   Please include: the name of the project; contact details (including an email address and telephone number); a brief project summary including how you will spend the money and the desired outcomes and any practical or technical help you hope to get from your community.
