Town Council News

It has been a busy summer for the Town Council and unlike many Councils we continue to hold meetings during August.

Buckfastleigh is fortunate to host a wide variety of activities and events during the summer months including the WoolFest, Fun Day and the Duck Race, Hello Summer for our young people and this year Buckfastleigh Water Day on Saturday 26th July. This was a collaboration between the Town Council and Dartmoor National Park to raise awareness of the importance of water in our community and how it is managed including flood prevention. The event was well attended and we would like to convey special thanks to the Orchard Millennium Green trustees and all the organisations, food vendors, entertainment and volunteers who participated to make it such a unique, relaxed and family orientated event.

There have been many concerns for the Council and our residents this year including the threatened closure of our only public toilets in 2027 by Teignbridge District Council unless we take on the additional financial burden of an old and poorly maintained building which will need to be cleaned, unlocked and locked 7 days a week. Whilst we will consider all options there are many unseen costs. Installing a pay as you go system is unlikely to meet the estimated annual running cost of £15,000 and evidence as shown that this system is often open to abuse and vandalism.

We continue to encourage our residents and businesses to come and hear about what we do, ask questions, participate in our meetings and join the Town Council. Dates of next meetings all held in the Town Hall at 7.00pm unless stated otherwise and open to the public:

Wednesday 10th September – Finance Committee

Wednesday 17th September – Town Council

Wednesday 15th October – Town Council – consultation event TBC
